Description:

An obvious score, to be sure, but still worth mentioning for the uninitiated reading this. Like I mentioned earlier, CM2008 is all about success. But it's not all on-filed tactics. Signing high-quality players for discount prices will do you just as good was winning 3 games straight. These days it's not just about being number 1 (although that invariably helps). Its also about the money. A club like Chelsea, with pockets deeper than the Pacific Ocean, signing people like David Beckham, Wayne Rooney and Ronaldinho isn't much of an issue; just whip out the checkbook and they come running. But for everyone else, it's a little harder. Most clubs will restrict how much money you have to spend on players. Even harder to navigate than this, however, is wage budgets. Its all well and good being able to sign Thierry Henry, but if you can't pay his weekly wage, kiss your merchandise profit goodbye. Many clubs are harsh with this, especially lower-tier clubs. They need you to cut costs everywhere you can, and if a player is draining too much money, he may just have to be shown the door. Some leagues, like the Australian A-League, even have salary caps; so even if you richer than Bill Gates, it won't do you any good. There's other money factors, like Merchandise, Stadium Upgrades, Bonuses, etc.etc. that have to be dealt with. Upgrading a stadium may cost a lot, but if done at the right time, can pay itself off in half a season (although good luck convincing your board of that!) After all the money is said and done, you can finally play some football, or soccer, or whatever you call it, right? WRONG! There's still the working out of tactics; putting players in their best positions, telling other players that they're just not good enough, telling people to run here, pass there, working out if you want to go all-out, U.S. Military style, or just hang back, pick your spots, wait for the opposition to make a critical mistake. All in all, it's tough, considering how many times you'll see the need to change these tactics. Sometimes what works against one club is plain useless against another. Changing up your tactics and players is a constant thing, it'll be up to you to decide when, where and how these changes should be made. So onto the game. Not much to do; watch your players on the pitch, change tactics, make subs, doing whatever you see necessary to win the match. If you're still wondering "How could this get any more complex?" Well let's hit the training menu, shall we? You can change everything; from how much training is done, to what type of training is undertaken. Defenders should be given guidance in tackling, marking, upper body strength and concentration. Strikers, however, do better with lower body training, footwork, keeping steady, pace and of course, set pieces. You also have the wonderfully new feature of being able to mould players into certain types of roles. Got a slow striker with heaps of shooting power? Tell him to shoot like. Got a small Brazilian forward who can run rings around any defender thrown at him; Tell hi go around the keeper rather than shooting past him. From movements off the ball, marking strategies, creativity, you name it, you can tell your men to start doing it. Although be patient; anything in training will take a while.

So between managing your money and managing your men, you'll have a rough time of it. Oh, and don't forget to keep both the board and the fans happy; if they expect victory, you better give it to them, or you'll find yourself in the cue down at the dole office.
